Dayne Long Wins FarmHouse Troy’s ‘23 Doane Award
Every year, all 32 chapters of FarmHouse Fraternity around the country present the recipients of the Doane Award. Named after founder D. Howard Doane, this award recognizes the outstanding senior of each FarmHouse chapter. Peers consider the recipient to have contributed the most to their chapter and fellow brothers.
On Wednesday at their annual Steak and Beans lunch, Dayne Long, a senior Chemistry major from Meridianville, Alabama, was named as the 2023 Doane Award recipient of the Alpha Pi chapter at Troy University. With that, Long joins Chris Stathopoulos, Bryce Leonard, Tanner Duffell, Austin Cowart, Garren Minor, James Cottingham, and Tyler Millo as the eight brothers to win the award, dating back to 2016.
“When I first pledged FarmHouse, I never truly understood what the Doane award was. As my time in FarmHouse went on, I grew more and more seeing the older guys that came before me showing me what it means to be a brother’s brother,” Long a member of the Beta Sigma pledge class, said. “To give up time, pleasures, and comforts for others without expecting anything in return. To be strong enough. Receiving this reward means a great deal to me personally. I accept it knowing that without my brothers before me and the brothers I have around me, I wouldn’t have gotten here. So thank you to my Brothers. ‘05.”
During his time as a brother, Long served as the Vice President of Recruitment as a sophomore and the chapter Secretary as a junior. Alongside President Garrett McKeon, Vice President Mason Baker, and Long, FarmHouse Troy won the 2023 Ruby Cup for the third time in chapter history and earned 3-star Excelsior Level Chapter status.
This past semester, Long was selected to The 87, a collection of 87 juniors and seniors at Troy who excel in areas of community service, academic success, campus involvement and potential for continued success upon graduation. In addition, Long is a member of Order of Omega, the Chemistry Club, The Fortress, and the Hiking Club.
On May 10, Long will be one of seven FarmHouse brothers to graduate from Troy University. With a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Long is set to work as a Chemist at Arichem LLC, a specialty chemical and custom chemical manufacturer in Ariton, Alabama.
“Coming into college, I was not expecting to rush a fraternity. I hated the idea of fraternities and seeing how they acted on campus. Then I met some guys from FarmHouse. They changed my mind. They showed me how it is possible to be a part of an actual brotherhood and grow together,” Long said. “For us to lift each other up. To find common ground and build relationships on that common ground. FarmHouse Internationals tried to change our motto from “Builder of Men” and it just didn’t work. We are the Builder of Men. That is what FarmHouse is to me. A place to seek refuge from the world and build each other up in Christ’s light. FarmHouse saved me from the world. Now my life is forever changed for the better.”
